GOC Melbourne Cup

For the last 5 years I have organised the Melbourne Cup Sweep at work, this year is no different but it is being brought to you by Ben Willy's Wheels.

While selling the tickets to the sweep, a lot of people asked me what is a sweep.  So lets have a look at the history of the Melbourne Cup and understand what a sweep is before we go any further.

Melbourne Cup

The Melbourne Cup is one of Australia's most prestigious horse races. It is a 3,200 metre race for three-year-olds and over. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world, and one of the richest turf races. Conducted annually by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in MelbourneVictoria, the event starts at 3pm on the first Tuesday in November and is known locally as "the race that stops a nation".
The first race was held in 1861 over two miles (3.219 km) but was shortened to 3,200 metres (1.988 mi) in 1972 when Australia adopted the metric system. This reduced the distance by 18.688 metres (61.312 ft), and Rain Lover's 1968 race record of 3:19.1 was accordingly adjusted to 3:17.9. The present record holder is the 1990 winner Kingston Rule with a time of 3:16.3.
Seventeen horses contested the first Melbourne Cup on Thursday 7 November 1861, racing for the modest prize of 710 gold sovereigns (£710) cash and a hand-beaten gold watch, winner takes all. The prize was not, as some have suggested, the largest purse up to that time.
In order to attract a bigger crowd to the fledgling Cup, the Victorian Racing Club, decided to issue members with two ladies tickets, calculating that "where ladies went, men would follow".  A large crowd of 4,000 men and women watched the race, although it has been suggested this was less than expected because of news reaching Melbourne of the death of explorers Burke and Wills five days earlier on 2 November. Nevertheless, the attendance was the largest at Flemington on any day for the past two years.
The inaugural Melbourne Cup of 1861 was an eventful affair when one horse bolted before the start, and three of the seventeen starters fell during the race, two of which died. Archer, a Sydney "outsider" who drew scant favour in the betting, spread-eagled the field and defeated the favourite, and Victorian champion, Mormon by six lengths. Dismissed by the bookies, Archer took a lot of money away from Melbourne, 'refuelling interstate rivalry' and adding to the excitement of the Cup. The next day, Archer was raced in and won another 2 mile long distance race, the Melbourne Town Plate.
It has become legend that Archer walked over 800 km (over 500 miles) to Flemington from de Mestre's stable at "Terara" near NowraNew South Wales. However, newspaper archives of the day reveal that he had travelled south from Sydney to Melbourne on a steamboat
Archer travelled to Melbourne by steamboat again the following year (1862) to run in the second Melbourne Cup. This time he won 810 gold sovereigns (£810) cash and a gold watch before a crowd of 7,000, nearly twice the size of the previous years large crowd in a time of 3.47.00, taking to two the number of Melbourne Cup wins by this horse. Winning the Melbourne Cup twice was a feat not repeated until more than seventy years later when Peter Pan won the race in 1932 and 1934, and winning the Melbourne Cup two years in a row was a feat not repeated until more than 30 years later when Rain Lover won in 1968 and 1969.
By 1865, Melbourne Cup Day was declared a half day holiday. By 1877 it was declared a whole day holiday to allow patrons to crowd the Flemington Racecourse. The Melbourne Cup was first held on the first Tuesday of November in 1875. It then too adopted the four-day format, which later evolved to today’s well-attended Carnival. From then until now the Melbourne Cup was growing to a locally and internationally supported event.
Phar Lap, the most famous horse in the world of his day, won the 1930 Melbourne Cup at 11/8 odds on, the shortest priced favourite in the history of the race. He had to be hidden away at Geelong before the race after an attempt was made to shoot him and only emerged an hour before the race time of the Cup. Phar Lap also competed in 1929 and 1931, but came 3rd and 8th respectively, despite heavy favouritism in both years.
Last year (2015) the first female jockey won the cup Michelle Payne on Prince of Penzance.

What is a Sweep

A sweep is when a number of people pay to purchase a set of tickets, each representing a horse. The tickets are given out randomly, and each ticket costs the same (usually $1 – $10), so there is no skill element involved, and odds are ignored completely. The prize pool is made up of the receipts exclusively, and is divided out to the holders of the tickets for winning horses. Typically, first place will win about half of the prize pool, with the remainder divided on a sliding scale to second, and third.
Office sweeps are exceptionally popular in Australia for the Melbourne Cup, and as a social event the sweep becomes the focus of the day’s festivities.

Horses

This is the best link I can find with all the horse details from  ABC News

1. Big Orange, the aptly named six-year-old (his sire is Duke Of Marmalade), has returned for a second tilt at the Cup.

2. Trainers Lee and Anthony Freedman are hoping Our Ivanhowe, a classy former German galloper, can give them a sixth Cup success.

3. Curren Mirotic is the lone representative to venture from Japan for the Cup this year and hopes to go much better than his much-hyped compatriot Fame Game (13th) last year.

4. Bondi Beach ran as the baby of the field last year (a three-year-old to northern hemisphere time) and it was the only time he's been out of the placings, beaten into 16th after a wide run.

5. Exospheric is a well-credentialed British stayer who was bought by Australian interests with a view to competing in this year's Caulfield Cup (2,400m).

6. Hartnell goes into the Cup as a deserved favourite on the back of a stellar run of form this spring.

7.  Who Shot Thebarman, veteran galloper with an irresistible name for once-a-year punters is back for a third attempt at the Melbourne Cup

8. Wicklow Brave. Trainer Willie Mullins is hoping his Cup runner this year can go one better than Max Dynamite who was an unlucky second for the stable 12 months ago.
9. Almoonqith raced in Europe and the United Arab Emirates before coming to Australia last year and is yet another contender lining up for a second shot at the Melbourne Cup.
10. Gallante is another galloper whose early career in Europe caught the attention of Australian owner Lloyd Williams.
11. One horse who certainly won't struggle with the 3,200 metres of the Melbourne Cup is the seven-year-old Grand Marshal.
12. Jameka could not have been more impressive when bolting in the Caulfield Cup (2,400m) by three lengths last start to cement her place as a top contender for the Melbourne Cup.
13. Heartbreak City started his career in France where he registered just one victory before he changed trainers and was tried over hurdles in Ireland.
14. Sir John Hawkwood  This former British galloper is in the twilight of his career and it's more than likely the Cup on Tuesday will be his swansong.
15. Excess Knowledge  Gai Waterhouse is searching for her second Cup with Excess Knowledge, who is by the same sire as Melbourne Cup winners Fiorente and Protectionist.
16. Beautiful Romance is a lightly raced mare from the powerful Godolphin racing operation who have a large team contesting the Cup this year.
17. Almandin is a former German galloper whose career has been plagued by injuries, limiting the seven-year-old to only 11 starts to date.
18. Assign is the last of owner Lloyd Williams' quartet of Cup runners and like the others began his career in Europe.
19. Grey Lion had a promising start to his career in France under master trainer Andre Fabre but his results tapered off as he stepped up in grade this year.
20. Oceanographer This English-trained raider set Cup discussions alight with his impressive, fast-finishing victory in the Lexus Stakes (2,500m) on Derby Day.
21. Secret Number The British-based Secret Number looms as one of the more interesting horses of this year's Cup having raced only four times in the past three years.
22. Pentathlon had a slow start to his career in New Zealand but became competitive as he stepped up in distance.
23. Yet another European-based raider for the Godolphin racing operation, Qewy entered Melbourne Cup calculations after winning the Geelong Cup (2,400m).

24. Rose Of Virginia, a mare who started her career in New Zealand, claimed the 24th and last place in the Cup field.

What is Ben Willy's Wheels and how can you help?

18 months ago I snapped my bicep muscle putting my wheelchair into my car.  Other than surgery, which there is no guarantee it will last, there is no fix.  I need to get a new car where I can wheel my wheelchair straight into the drivers seat and drive.  The most suitable van will cost $150,000.

I have setup a GoFundMe to help me raise the funds for this.  If you can help to donate to Ben Willy's Wheel, I would be most grateful.  Please share the GoFundMe on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin or any other social media you have.

We will be have a BBQ in a couple of weeks at work to raise some funds as well, you will then be able to have a look at a display vehicle and see the many benefits it will be for me.
